Top Ten

Here are TV characters with whom I would like to have an americano or beer.  I tried to narrow it down to 10 characters and had to settle instead on 10 shows (in no particular order):

1. Josh Lyman, President Barlet, Leo McGarry and CJ Cregg (The West Wing).  I could go on and on for my reasons why, but suffice it to say my interest (and idealism) regarding politics makes me so excited at the idea of sitting around the table (or the Oval Office) with these people.

2. Dan Rydell (Sports Night) – Yes, another Aaron Sorkin character.  Dan is funny and thoughtful and knows a lot about sports and friendship. I could learn a lot from this guy, and would really enjoy the conversation

3. Leslie Knope (Parks & Recreation): We could talk about how great Pawnee/Muncie is. And I am dying to hear about her encounter with Joe Biden.  Of course, we would chat over waffles.

4. Starbuck/Kara (Battlestar Galactica): No spoilers here. I’ll just say it would be a fascinating conversation. I have SO many questions.

5. Dwight Schrute (The Office):  I would love to talk with him about beets, bears, and Battlestar Galactica. I'd also like to help him plan some pranks against Jim.

6. Niles, Marty & Frasier Crane (Frasier): Niles and Frasier would drink sherry.  I would drink a beer with Marty.  And I would mostly enjoy watching them interact and would probably say very little.

7. Lucille Bluth (Arrested Development): I love Lucille so much I named my wireless network after her.  She is probably one of my favorite characters ever.  I can only hope Gene Parmesan would make an appearance.

8. Roger Sterling & Peggy Olsen (Mad Men): Roger - Mostly because he is a silver fox.  I would love to pick Peggy’s brain about her experience as a woman executive at SCDP – and to share with her how much better it is for women in the workplace now, thanks to women like her.

9. Coach Eric Taylor (Friday Night Lights): I would want him to teach me about effective leadership.
Clear Eyes. Full Heart. Can’t Lose.

10. Sawyer (Lost): I have a lot of questions about the island. And I wouldn’t mind having him call me Freckles.


Honorable mentions: I love these characters, but they all frighten me too much to spend quality time with them.

Betty Draper (Mad Men)
Benjamin Linus (Lost)

    hmmm. who would i like to sit down with...let's see. love the cop show...and i can't remember the name, but the head guy is Greg and the tall guy with the shaved head (or is he bald.)
    Oh, and the people from Criminal Intent.

My Favorite Aunt

I wrote this on January 30, 2013 - the day Aunt Kathy lost her battle with ovarian cancer It is only fitting that it is raining today.  The skies are crying with me and my family.  My Aunt Kathy passed away this morning, and I can think of no other words to describe how I'm feeling other than my heart is broken. My Aunt Kathy was more than just an aunt to me, my sisters, and my 7 cousins.  She was there for every important milestone in our lives - and a lot of the unimportant ones too.  She treasured us and made us feel special. She was there for graduations, confirmations, weddings, birthdays, vacations and everything in between. She used to take me and my sisters shopping for our birthdays.  Each of us got our own shopping trip each year. We'd go to Hawthorn Mall together and have some quality Aunt/Niece time shopping for clothes.  She was always so generous with her time and attention. Angst and Questions

When I turned 30, it was like a switch had flipped. The angst of my 20s were gone. I knew who I was and stopped apologizing for it. The pesky “Who am I? What am I supposed to do with my life?” questions were answered.  Life was good and the future was brighter than ever before. I am angsty and questioning my identity…again.  It feels different this time, but frustrating nonetheless. It’s like the ground I worked so hard to gain is slipping under my feet. Like I’m on a treadmill that’s going too fast and I keep falling back to the end of the belt, about to fall off. There is a lot that factors into this season – some life changes. Some unmet expectations. Dreams that haven’t been fulfilled.  Sorry I won’t be more specific, but I’m honestly not comfortable voicing these tender things to the world. Manners Matter - Even in the Morning

I am not a morning person.  Just ask my college roommate, Trisha.  Thankfully, she was not a morning person either. We had a standing rule in room 112: Do not speak to one another until both roommates have showered.  It's not that I'm mean in the morning. I just need about an hour or so of silence and solitude to be ready to face the world. Maybe this is an introvert thing? Anyway.  I take the train to work every day and this affords me about 40 minutes of silence and solitude to prepare for thoughtful interaction with others. I often spend this time reading or catching up on email. Sometimes I just stare out the window or listen to music. But I am not communicating with anyone - at least not verbally.  Once I get to work, I pour myself a cup of coffee and am ready to face the day.  No one talks on the train in the morning.
